Greenwich Peninsula Conrad Shawcross Launch

Greewich Peninsula, London.
21 September 2016.

"It's still primarily a flue stack, but by using an interesting piece of design, it's hopefully a beautiful landmark on the horizon too."
- Conrad Shawcross

Visionary developer Knight Dragon commissioned mechanical designer Conrad Shawcross to create a sculpture for Greenwich Peninsula's new Energy Centre. The structure, named the Optic Cloak, surrounds the chimney and was designed with perforated layers and a translucent skin for wind to pass through, whilst creating a mesmerising effect.

Greenwich Peninsula asked Timebased to create an official launch party to celebrate this impressive structure. Guests were chauffeured by a bespoke taxi service from the NOW Gallery to the Energy Centre viewing point, welcomed with a glass of fizz and by the designer himself. As the sun started to set, guests marvelled as the last rays glinted off the 49m high sculpture.

With the Energy Centre still in construction, the raw setting and industrial backdrop reflected the mechanical structure of Conrad’s work, creating an immersive exhibition space. Music from DJ Nick Hadfield played as guests made their way into the exhibition, which featured makets of the Optic Cloak and drone footage on the making of the sculpture. Lustrous red lighting echoed throughout the space as guests heard from Conrad Shawcross about his inspiration and creativity behind the newest addition to London’s skyline.

“It was an amazing evening, it looked incredible. It was a pleasure to work with you too - thanks for everything.”
- Knight Dragon
